Support for student protesters fails during Madison Common Council meeting

MADISON (WKOW) -- The City of Madison Common Council voted down a resolution that would have reaffirmed their call for an immediate ceasefire and supported student protesters on UW-Madison's campus.

In Tuesday night's common council meeting, members addressed the ongoing protests on the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Library Mall.

Members were encouraging Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin and protesters to continue negotiations in good faith. The council also defended the rights of any student and community member to assemble "as part of a peaceful demonstration."

Additionally, they called for an immediate ceasefire and condemned any and all acts of hatred including antisemitism and Islamophobia.

The motion failed with an 8-8 vote.

Protest organizers have not yet commented on the meeting, but were in attendance. They have told 27 News in past interviews that they plan to send a new proposal to Mnookin which details the ways the university can divest from companies benefiting from the war.
