Uber driver stabbed multiple times by passenger, suspect arrested

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police report an Uber driver was stabbed multiple times in the parking lot of an east side Target Monday night.

According to MPD Lt. Jason Ostrenga, officers were called to the Target parking lot at 4301 Lien Road around 8:40 p.m. for a man that was hurt.

Ostrenga said the victim had run to the front doors of the store where shoppers called 911.

"There was some citizens that tried to help him including a nurse," Ostrenga added.

Officers responded and found the man with what appeared to be multiple stab wounds to the torso and who was bleeding heavily.

The 52-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital, where he had to undergo surgery for his injuries.

"The last I heard probably about 3 a.m. today, the victim was stable," Ostrenga said. "He had multiple wounds to his body from a sharp instrument and possibly a knife."

MPD detectives began investigating and learned the victim was an Uber driver and had picked up the suspect down the road from the Target.

"They were coming to almost a stop it. We think the suspect was trying to guide the victim slightly around the corner of Target in the parking lot but it was at a very slow idling speed, slow enough that after the victim was stabbed the suspect could jump out of the backseat and get into the driver's seat of the car and take off," Ostrenga explained.

Ostrenga told 27 News they notified law enforcement statewide, and the Racine County Sheriff's Office spotted the stolen car.

"He [a deputy] tried to initiate a stop, the vehicle pulled over momentarily, but then he took off and there was a pursuit that probably went on for approximately 5 to 10 minutes in Racine County where eventually the deputies deployed spikes successfully," Ostrenga said. "The car eventually ended up on its rims."

The sheriff's office and Wisconsin State Patrol arrested the suspect.

Ostrenga said Antonio Rodgers, 22, was booked in the Racine County Jail and is expected to be transferred to the Dane County Jail Tuesday afternoon.

MPD reports the suspect and victim did not know each other prior to the attack and Rodgers had no clear connections to the Madison area.
