Fitchburg man arrested for OWI after slamming into squad car

FITCHBURG (WKOW) — A Fitchburg man allegedly hit a parked squad car while intoxicated, sending an officer and another person to the hospital, according to the Fitchburg Police Department.

The incident happened Tuesday at about 9:15 p.m. on South Fish Hatchery Road near Brendan Avenue.

Officials said an officer was parked behind a disabled vehicle in a lane of traffic with its emergency lights on while he was helping the driver.

50-year-old Andrew De Marco slammed into the back of the squad car. The crash was powerful enough to push the police car, with the officer and motorist inside, into the disabled vehicle.

The officer and a passenger were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The squad car is likely a total loss.

De Marco wasn’t hurt. He was taken to the Dane County Jail for two counts of OWI causing Injury and two counts of Operating with a Prohibited Alcohol Concentration causing Injury. This was his first offense.
