MADISON (WKOW) — Early Monday morning, detectives from the Madison Police Violent Crimes Unit arrested Kenyairra I.S. Gadson, 21, Madison, on a tentative charge of first degree intentional homicide in connection with an early Sunday morning shooting.

Surveillance images and information from witnesses assisted detectives in identifying Gadson, according to a police department incident report.

MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain tells 27 News the suspect and others involved in a fight that led up to the shooting were seen on cameras in the State Street Campus Parking Ramp. Police say there is no video of the shooting itself.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who was shot and killed as Steven Villegas, 21, of Madison.

Police tell 27 News two groups were involved in a dispute that started on Frances Street and spilled over into the parking ramp. There was a fist fight that led up to the firing of the first shot. These two groups have had issues in the past, according to police.

Officers were already in the area for Freakfest patrols and heard the shots. They found Villegas, who had been shot in the torso. He died at a hospital.

This shooting took place just before 2 a.m. on the Frances Street side of State Street Campus Ramp.

She was taken into custody without incident.
