Number of car thefts in Madison drops slightly in August

MADISON (WKOW) — Madison police responded to 41 stolen auto calls in August, according to Madison Police Chief Mike Koval.

Of those, 28 have been recovered, according to Koval.

This represents an 8.9 percent drop compared to August of 2017, where there were 45 stolen auto reports.

So far this year, there have been 246 stolen autos compared to 237 for the same time in 2017, a slight increase of 3.8 percent.

Keys left in vehicles continue to be a big issue, says Koval, with 37 of the 41 stolen autos that had keys left inside.

There was also one stolen vehicle that was left running and unlocked, says Koval.
