Badgers Name Co-Defensive Coordinators
Tuesday 01-18-2011 2:36pm CT

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema announced Tuesday that he has promoted Chris Ash and Charlie Partridge to co-defensive coordinators and hired Dave Huxtable, most recently the defensive coordinator at UCF, to coach linebackers. These moves complete the Badgers’ defensive coaching staff after former defensive coordinator Dave Doeren took the Northern Illinois head coaching job following the season.

“I’m excited to announce the completion of our coaching staff,” Bielema said. “I’m thrilled to be able to promote Chris and Charlie to co-defensive coordinators and keep the continuity of our defensive staff intact. They have both done terrific jobs during their time at Wisconsin and, with a number of key returning players on that side of the ball, I’m eager to watch them continue to develop good players.”

Partridge and Ash were college teammates at Drake and on the same coaching staff at Drake in 1996-97.

Partridge is entering his fourth season at Wisconsin. He spent the last three years as UW’s defensive line coach. Under his tutelage, five different players have earned All-Big Ten honors, including first-team selections O’Brien Schofield and J.J. Watt. Schofield was second in the country in 2009 with 24.5 tackles for loss (second-best in school history) while Watt was seventh in the country last season with 21.0 TFLs. Watt was named a second-team All-American and won the Lott IMPACT Award. Partridge has also worked with the Badgers’ specialists.

Ash is starting his second year at UW. In his first season with the Badgers, Ash coached the secondary. Three of Wisconsin’s four starting defensive backs earned All-Big Ten honors in 2010. Cornerback Antonio Fenelus was a first-team selection after recording a team-high four interceptions and 11 passes defended, while also recovering two fumbles and forcing another. Free safety Aaron Henry, in his first season after converting from cornerback, was a second-team selection. He scored three defensive touchdowns while recording three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, one forced fumble and leading the team with 47 solo tackles. Cornerback Niles Brinkley earned honorable mention honors, breaking up nine passes and forcing a fumble.

Huxtable, with 29 years of college coaching experience, has spent the last seven seasons at UCF, the last three as the Golden Knights’ defensive coordinator. Last year UCF won the Conference USA title and defeated Georgia in the Liberty Bowl, recording a school-record 11 wins. Huxtable’s defense was a big reason for that success. The Knights ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense (17.1 ppg.), eighth in rushing defense (108.4 ypg.), 15th in total defense (315.4 ypg.) and 18th in pass efficiency defense (113.0).

“I think Dave is a great addition to our staff,” Bielema said. “He brings a ton of experience, having coached the linebacker position virtually his entire career. His defenses at UCF were very well-coached, as evidenced by their success this season. As good a coach as he is, he is even a better person and he will fit into our staff very well.”

In 2009, UCF was fourth in the country in rushing defense (82.8 ypg.), sixth in sacks (38.0) and tied for seventh in fumbles recovered (16). In Huxtable’s first season as coordinator, the Knights were third in the country in tackles for loss (8.2 per game) and 18th in the country in pass efficiency defense (107.5).

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to coach at Wisconsin,” Huxtable said. “The University of Wisconsin is a top-notch program with great tradition. When I came up to visit I was so impressed with the people, the coaching staff and Coach Bielema. I’m very excited to get the opportunity to work for him. I’m looking forward to getting up to Madison and winning football games.”

Huxtable spent his first four seasons at UCF as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. From 2001-03, Huxtable worked at North Carolina. He coached the linebackers for three seasons and also served as the team's defensive coordinator for the final two years of his stint in Chapel Hill. In 2001, he also was North Carolina's special teams coordinator.

Huxtable helped guide a unit that finished first in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 15th in the nation in 2001 in total defense. In addition, he molded a group of inexperienced linebackers into one of the top units in the ACC. Under Huxtable's instruction, former walk-on David Thornton earned All-ACC honors in 2001 after leading the Tar Heels with 131 tackles. That same season, fellow linebacker Quincy Monk was second on the team with 125 stops. Thornton (fourth round) and Monk (seventh round) were both selected in the NFL Draft.

Prior to North Carolina, Huxtable spent a year as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Oklahoma State. Before coaching the Cowboys, he spent two years on the East Carolina staff. Huxtable worked with the Pirate linebackers in 1998 and defensive line in 1999.

Huxtable and UCF head coach George O'Leary worked together at Georgia Tech during the 1990s. While serving as the Yellow Jackets' linebackers coach from 1992-97, Huxtable also spent time as the program's defensive coordinator (1996-97) and special teams coordinator (1992-94).

Huxtable’s first stint at East Carolina came in the early 1990s, coaching linebackers and special teams from 1990-91. He also coached at Western Kentucky from 1985-89 and was the Hilltoppers' defensive coordinator in 1989. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Iowa State in 1982 and then served as the defensive coordinator at Independence Community College in Kansas.

During his career, Huxtable has coached a pair of players who were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft: Robert Jones at East Carolina (Dallas, 1991) and Keith Brooking at Georgia Tech (Atlanta, 1997).

A 1979 graduate of Eastern Illinois with a bachelor's degree in education, Huxtable and his wife Vicki have a daughter, Shea, and a son, Jake. Shea played tennis at Georgia Southern and Jake played the 2009 and 2010 seasons on the UCF baseball squad.

J.J. Watt goes pro
Thursday 01-06-2011 2:28pm CT
From UWBadgers.com--Defensive end J.J. Watt announced Thursday he will forgo his final season of college eligibility and enter the NFL draft. Watt was named the 2010 Lott IMPACT Trophy winner, earned second-team All-America honors and was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection after leading the Badgers and ranking third in the country with 21.0 tackles for loss this season.

Watt announced his decision in an open letter to UW fans.
Open Letter to Badger Fans:

First and foremost, I would like to say that my time at the University of Wisconsin has been unbelievable and it has far surpassed anything that I ever could have imagined. I would also like to thank Coach Bielema and the entire coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play for my home-state team, as well as helping me to succeed both in the classroom and on the field at the highest level possible.

This has, without a doubt, been one of the most difficult decisions of my life, and it is one that was not reached quickly, or easily. At this time, I have made the decision to enter the 2011 NFL Draft. It has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember to play in the National Football League, and through hard work and dedication, that dream finally has a chance to become a reality.

I will be a Wisconsin Badger for life and am forever grateful for all of the love and support that the fans, administration and community have shown to my family and I during my time in Madison. I could not have asked for better coaches to play for, better teammates to play alongside, or a better fan base to represent throughout my collegiate career.

I just want to say thank you again to everyone who has helped me to reach this point in my life, as I would not be here today if it wasn’t for an unbelievable amount of support from my family, friends, teachers, coaches and teammates. While I am closing an extremely enjoyable chapter of my life, I am also beginning a new chapter and am very much looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead.

As I move forward with my life, I will continue to live by the morals and values that have helped to get me where I am today. I am very excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for both myself and for the JJ Watt Foundation, as we try to spread the message to kids that if you “Dream Big and Work Hard,” anything is possible.

On Wisconsin!

- JJ Watt

Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema on Watt’s decision:
“I talked with multiple people connected with NFL teams on J.J.’s behalf to make sure he had the best information to make an informed decision and one that he was comfortable with. He is a terrific example of what we want our student-athletes to be, both on and off the field, and he will be missed. I wish him nothing but the best and I know he will be successful in his future endeavors.”

TWO BADGERS WIN BIG TEN HONOR
Monday 10-25-2010 12:38pm CT

For their strong performances in Wisconsin’s 31-30 win at Iowa on Saturday, junior defensive end J.J. Watt and junior punter Brad Nortman have been honored by the Big Ten, the Conference announced Monday. Watt was named co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Nortman picked up co-Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.

Watt posted one sack and two tackles for loss, part of a five-tackle day against the Hawkeyes. In addition, he blocked an extra point in the first quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game. Watt's lone sack of the game came at a crucial time as he brought down Ricky Stanzi for an 11-yard loss with just 26 seconds left in the game, forcing Iowa to take a timeout.

Going up against the No. 1 and No. 12 teams in the country in the last two weeks, Watt has put up nine tackles, 3.0 sacks, 5.0 TFLs, one quarterback hurry and one blocked kick. This is the second player of the week honor for Watt in his career.

Nortman, who was previously named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 25, 2008, had two punts for 96 yards, including a 54-yarder on Saturday. His biggest play of the game though came without a kick. Trailing 30-24 with less than eight minutes to play and facing a fourth-and-four at Wisconsin’s own 26-yard line, Nortman took the snap and ran up the middle 17 yards for a first down. Wisconsin ended up scoring the go-ahead touchdown on the drive and then held off the Hawkeyes to get the win.

It’s the first time since the Hawaii contest on Dec. 6, 2009, that the Badgers have had multiple player of the week honorees. For that game, Watt was named Defensive Player of the Week, while John Clay was chosen as co-Offensive Player and David Gilreath earned the Special Teams honor.

Watt and Nortman become the fourth and fifth UW players to be honored by the Big Ten in 2010 and their accolades make five weeks in a row that Wisconsin has earned weekly honors.

Freshman running back James White won back-to-back Freshman of the Week honors on Sept. 27 and Oct. 4, while Clay was named co-Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 11. Last week, Gilreath was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
CLAY WINNERS BIG TEN HONOR

Junior running back John Clay has been named co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Minnesota, the Big Ten Conference announced on Monday.

Clay, who shares this week’s honor with Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor, tied a career high with three rushing touchdowns while gaining 111 yards on 21 carries in a 41-23 victory over Minnesota.

The junior running back went over the 100-yard mark and scored a touchdown for the 11th time in the last 12 games. The reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year was part of a rushing attack that racked up 250 yards on the ground against the Gophers.

The performance marked the second time in his career that Clay scored three touchdowns against Minnesota. He also accomplished the feat last year, which earned him his first career Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor.

A three-time winner of the award, Clay currently ranks seventh in the country with 692 rushing yards and is tied for the Big Ten lead with nine rushing touchdowns.

In his career at Wisconsin, Clay ranks eighth in career rushing yards, third in yards per rush, fifth in rushing touchdowns, 10th in carries and fifth in career 100-yard games.
