WIBA-AM first became familiar with Derrell during his participation in a contest on our sister station ESPN Radio 1070. During that contest, Derrell became co-host of a weekly sports talk show. It soon became clear that with Derrell’s experience and knowledge he would be a great choice to host a minority-based program.
The purpose of Outreach is to raise awareness and to educate listeners on the positive things that people, most notably people of color, are doing in the Greater Madison area every single day. People who are working every day to provide programs and activities designed to educate youth, services that promote workforce and economic development or even just to make the community a better place. These dedicated groups and individuals need to be able to tell folks where to find them and how to access what is available. Outreach will provide that opportunity. “Too many people in this community either don't have access to, or don't know where to go to get these types of services”, says Derrell Connor. “One of our goals is to provide somewhere people can tune in and hear about a program, class, or activity that could benefit them, their family, or their neighbor.” Outreach will also spend time talking about the issues that are important and will invite guests that can educate the entire community.
Derrell grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, moved to San Francisco and attended San Francisco State University. He met his wife Laura in California seventeen years ago, and followed her to Madison where they have lived for the past fourteen years. They have two children.
Derrell is an Account Executive at Mortenson, Matzelle & Meldrum, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Urban League of Greater Madison, and has actively been involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters for the past ten years.
His hobbies are basketball, golf, talk radio, movies, and attending sporting events.
