Student hit by oncoming car while trying to board Oregon school bus

OREGON, Wis. (WKOW) -- One student was hurt Friday morning after being hit by an oncoming car as they were trying to board a school bus, according to the Oregon School District.

The child suffered minor injuries, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office.

It happened at about 7:30 a.m. on County Highway MM between Oregon and Brooklyn.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office said the bus was in the northbound lane of CTH MM with yellow and red lights activated and a stop sign out when a vehicle traveling south failed to stop.

Citations for the driver involved are pending. The sheriff's office said inattentive driving appears to be the primary cause of the crash.

According to Wisconsin law, a vehicle that approaches a stopped school bus displaying a flashing red warning light must stop not less than 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or the operator extinguishes the flashing red warning lights.

The Oregon School District sent a letter to parents of students on the bus.

In the letter, the district said a student was hit as they were trying to cross the street and board the bus.

"The bus driver followed emergency protocols and immediately called 911," the letter to parents said. "The student was transported to the hospital. According to those present, the student was awake and alert. All other students on the bus are safe."

Following the incident, the bus dropped remaining students off at school and they were met by the principal.

"We know that this is very upsetting to our school community, and will have Student Services team members available to meet with any student who may need support today," the district said.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
