Man killed in Columbia Co. crash was former Sun Prairie High School coach

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Stephen Riggins, the man killed in a crash in Columbia County on Friday, was a former coach at Sun Prairie High School, according to anonline obituary.

Riggins, 66, and his dog Ruby were killed after anAlliant Energy truck failed to stop at a stop signin the town of Dekorra on Friday.

An obituary states Riggins started teaching history at Sun Prairie High School in 1981 and spent 30 years there. He also coached cross country and track at the school.

A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 15 at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church at 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, Columbia County Sheriff’s officials investigating the crash say the driver who hit Riggins.

Alliant Energy released the following statement to 27 News regarding the incident:

"We are keeping the individual’s family, loved ones and friends in our thoughts during this very difficult time. We’re cooperating with local officials in their full investigation of the accident.

We take safety seriously at Alliant Energy, and the safety of our customers, employees and the public is our first priority. We will conduct our own internal safety investigation."
