Lafayette County Board to consider controversial media resolution

A Lafayette County board committee on Tuesday morning amended, then passed a controversial resolution that had threatened members of the media with prosecution.

The resolution goes before the full board at 7:15 p.m. this evening. (Download Agenda)

When first presented last week, the resolution appeared to be an effort to crack down on the release of information to the media about an ongoing water quality study in southwest Wisconsin.

Among the provisions of the original resolution was a requirement that that any news release would include the statement, “Please do not alter, edit, cut or adjust this press release in any way. Please print the content provided in full.”

The resolution continues, “Violators will be prosecuted.”
