Sara Lee Bakery plant in Madison to shut down in January

The bakery plant that makes Sara Lee products in Madison will shut down in January.

Employees were notified Tuesday of the pending closure.

Bimbo Bakeries USA, which runs the plant, says it will cease operations by January 2. The facility is located at 3401 East Washington Avenue. Production will shift to other facilities in the region.

According to Bimbo, the Madison bakery produces bread and buns and employs 158 people.

In a news release, David Tormena, Vice President of Region Operations for Bimbo Bakeries USA says, “Making the decision to close a facility is never an easy one. After careful analysis and consideration, we determined moving production to other bakeries in our system is a more efficient and cost-effective option.”

Bimbo says customers of Sara Lee won’t see a change in products.

Human resources representatives will meet the people who are losing their jobs and union representatives to talk about severance packages and other benefits.

“We truly value and respect our dedicated associates at the Madison bakery and will assist them throughout the transition,” Tormena says.
