Sears closing West Towne Mall store in September

MADISON (WKOW) -- Sears at West Towne Mall will close at the end of September.

Sears spokesman Larry Costello confirmed the closing to 27 News Friday, saying this is part of Sears' efforts to "streamline and focus on its best stores."

The Sears Auto Center will close in late August. Sears says liquidation sales will start in mid-July.

Employees will be offered severance and the ability to apply for open positions at other Kmart and Sears stores.

Sears sent this statement to 27 News:

As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline the Company's operations and focus on our best stores, the company on Thursday, June 28 informed associates at the Sears store at West Towne Mall in Madison that it would be closing in late September 2018 and the Sears Auto Center will close in late August. Liquidation sales will begin as early as July 13. The number of associates is not available. Eligible associates impacted by the store closure will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.

According to West Towne Mall Manager Megan Ballard, this will be an opportunity for the Mall owners to re-develop that part of the property.

Ballard said it was too early to say exactly what type of development could be planned.

However, she did say the Sears closing was not unexpected.

The Madison West Towne Mall store is the only Sears location closing in Wisconsin.
