Fire engulfs historic church in downtown Milwaukee

A four-alarm fire consumed an historic church Tuesday afternoon in downtown Milwaukee.

Pastor Hunter Hofmann told WISN 12 News he saw the flames and called 911. He said there was construction work being done on the roof.

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at 9th and Highland downtown was founded by immigrants from Pomerania, Germany, in 1847 and is the second oldest Missouri Synod Congregation in Wisconsin.

The church was originally at 4th Street between Wells and Kilbourn. It then moved to 4th and Wells streets before moving to 9th and Highland.

Hofmann said the church is the oldest Lutheran church in Milwaukee

The church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
