Sand event last night, today and tomorrow because of low temperatures salt will not work.
This will be a very light, dry powdery type of snow, which is very easy to plow off and shovel. Our concerns for this storm are twofold. One is the duration of the storm with snow continuing until about 9am tomorrow, and the second is the temperatures. The forecast is calling for a 2"-4" range before the storm is all done. The bad news is that we don't have good salting temps; we will need temperatures to get up to around 15 degrees before salt will work.
Plow and sand crews have been out since the snow started to fall. We will be focusing on the 32 main routes, which incorporate the main arterials, main connector streets, Madison Metro Bus Routes and streets around schools and hospitals.
Remember City of Madison policy requires 3" or more accumulation and the storm must be either over or just about completed before we start the residential plowing operations.
